Viatcheslav
Novikov - Brian Melvin - Toivo Unt make up the trio of
Classics In Jazz.
Viatcheslav, being a master
pianist, brings a wealth of knowledge from his classical background.
He was the leading classical pianist of the former Soviet Union, now
living in Finland, where he is a professor of music and is continually
performing around the world and teaching master classes and private
students. He is also a truly gifted improviser with a deep love and
respect for the art of jazz. He is able to call on any idea at anytime
using the piano as his medicine cabinet to create a tonic that is
needed for the moment. He truely is one with his instrument and connects
spirituality straight to his music. A very special and rare combination
to attain in any art form.
Brian brings
another side to this trio. He is again a musician who has many backgrounds
and relishes in painting the music in this project. You must be able
to see the music in terms of colors and spacial configurations, says
Brian. Its creating an atmosphere and getting close to what the original
composer may have been feeling in terms of emotions and energy. A
meditation of a sort. The time feeling has to be elastic, the idea
of floating in space. Then adding your energy to the mix is where
it become personal and majestic. There is a lot of Psycology in this
music, stemming from the composers ideas to the trio interpreting
the music in the open and boundless . Its mind music. It becomes free
and has no limits to where the trio can take the music or where the
music may take the trio.
Bassist Toivo Unt
again has a vast background , and brings a very nice, warm and beautiful
sound in his approach to the bass . The bassist must find a way to
be harmonically in touch with the composition and at the same time
be able to improvise his ideas at any moment. Its the same idea as
the bassists in jazz music along with the element of composition and
fine tuning of the classical genre. Altogether Viatcheslav-Brian-and
Toivo make the Classics In Jazz a trio of imagination and one
full of meaning and surprise. |
| The trio has just
finished their first recording and the CD "Paintings"
is available in 2006 on Nõmme Records. They covered composers
Schubert-Bach-Tchaikovsky-Ligeti-Pärt-Scriabin - with interpretations
of the blues and original composition dedicated to bassist Phil Lesh
from the Grateful Dead. |
